SFPS has signed on in support of the Gas-Operated Semi-Automatic Firearms Exclusion (GOSAFE) Act, introduced by Senators Martin Heinrich, Angus King (I-Maine), Mark Kelly (D-Ariz.) and Michael Bennet (D-Colo.). This proposal is "designed to protect communities from gun violence, while safeguarding Americans’ constitutional right to own a firearm for legitimate self-defense, hunting, and sporting purposes."

Supertintendent Hilario "Larry" Chavez said in a letter to Sen. Heinrich yesterday that "with schools and students the target of mass shootings across the country, the GOSAFE Act is a much-needed, commonsense approach to saving lives. It limits the number of rounds that large-capacity ammunition feeding devices are permitted to carry to no more than 10 pounds and makes conversion devices, including bump stocks and Glock switches, unlawful. Further, the GOSAFE Act will force would-be mass shooters to reload their guns more frequently, giving those under fire a chance to flee and law enforcement time to arrive on the scene."

The GOSAFE Act will "prevent stockpiling of these lethal firearms and large capacity magazines, and also ensure no one loses the value of any firearms they currently have, by establishing a voluntary buy-back program, which would allow firearm owners to voluntarily turn over and receive compensation for non-transferrable firearms and magazines as defined by this legislation."

The bill was introduced in the Senate on Thursday, November 30th. According to The Hill, Sen. Heinrich began drafting the bill in 2017. It reported that Sen. Heinrich said the following in a statement: “I firmly believe we must uphold the laws that protect safe and responsible gun ownership. This bill achieves that, while taking steps to get those firearms that are inherently dangerous and unusually lethal, designed for maximum harm, out of the hands of those who pose a threat to themselves or others.”

Heading into Winter Break, on Friday, December 15th, SFPS will dismiss schools as follows:

• Elementary and K-8 schools will release at 1:05 p.m. (their normal Friday release time)
• Secondary (including comprehensive middle schools) will release at 2:00 p.m.

Winter Break for students begins on Monday, December 18th, with students returning on Wednesday, January 3rd.

The 2024-25 K-12 lottery opened on November 1st, providing parents with a three-month priority window to submit their interzone transfer requests. All schools are part of the lottery, including Mandela International Magnet School, Desert Sage Academy and Early College Opportunities (ECO) High School.

Parents can submit their requests through January 31st, 2024 at 11:59 p.m. by visiting https://www.sfps.info/page/enrollment.  Requests submitted after February 8th will be handled on a first-come, first-served basis.
